'Managed a team of 10 sales representatives' describes a structure. 'Led a 10-person team to 127% of $8.5M annual quota, with 8 of 10 reps at or above target' describes a result.
The transition from individual contributor to sales manager is the most scrutinized career pivot in sales hiring. VPs want evidence that you can develop others, not just sell yourself. Ramp time for new hires, rep promotion rates, coaching cadence, and team retention metrics demonstrate management capability. If your resume only highlights your personal sales achievements without team development metrics, you are positioning yourself as a senior AE, not a manager.
