Spotify hires against three values.
Most guides still teach the old five.

What this page covers

Spotify publishes three values on lifeatspotify.com and calls the set The Bassline: One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen. The five-value list you will still find across most interview guides is superseded. This page gives each current value verbatim, what it means in practice, a worked quantified bullet that evidences it, and the anti-pattern, then maps the five assessment questions Spotify publishes to the evidence that answers them.

The quick answer

What are Spotify's core values in 2026?

Spotify publishes three values, and it calls them The Bassline: One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen. One Team is about the power of alignment, breaking down silos, sharing context freely, and driving toward shared goals. Human Judgment is trusting people to make the right calls, learn from mistakes, and grow through smart decisions and thoughtful risk-taking. Make It Happen is a bias toward action: execution, urgency, and delivering results that matter. Alongside them Spotify publishes five assessment questions it says it asks about candidates, covering values alignment, ownership and pride in delivery, adaptability, collaboration, and drive. That is the only published evaluation rubric Spotify has. One caution: the five-value set many guides still teach, innovative, collaborative, sincere, passionate, and playful, no longer appears on lifeatspotify.com. It is superseded, so preparing against it means preparing against a framework Spotify no longer publishes. On a resume, evidence each value inside a quantified outcome rather than naming it. .

Spotify publishes three values on lifeatspotify.com: One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen. It calls them “the foundation of everything we do” and names the set for the bassline, the constant rhythm that keeps the company in sync while it improvises and innovates. That is the current framework, and it is short enough to memorize in a minute.

The problem is what is still in circulation. Innovative, collaborative, sincere, passionate, and playful were Spotify values once, they are widely republished, and they no longer appear anywhere on lifeatspotify.com. Three of the top ten Google results for spotify core values still publish that set, because third parties copied pre-rebrand material and nobody went back to check the source.

This is not a gotcha, and it is not a small thing either. If you build your resume language and your interview stories around the old five, you are preparing carefully against a framework Spotify no longer publishes, and you are doing it with no way of knowing. The substance is not wasted: collaboration in particular is still one of the five questions Spotify says it asks. But the labels are not Spotify's published values, so use them as content, never as a quote.

One honest limit, and we will not pretend otherwise: we do not know the date Spotify changed them, and nobody outside the company reliably does. What is verifiable is the present tense. The three values are what Spotify publishes today; the five are not. Anyone who hands you a changeover year is guessing.

What Spotify does not publish

Spotify publishes the three values and the five assessment questions. It does not publish a per-value grading rubric, a scorecard, or a weighting between the three, and it does not publish a date for when the values changed. Treat any per-value scoring sheet you find online as invented. The readings, resume examples, and question-to-value mapping below are ResumeAdapter's mapping, illustrative templates rather than Spotify-supplied.

Every worked bullet is written for a role Spotify actually hires for, and the numbers in them are examples of shape, not Spotify data.

01
Spotify value 01

One Team

We believe in the power of alignment. One Team means breaking down silos, sharing context freely, and driving toward shared goals. When we win, we win together.

Spotify's description, verbatim
Assessment question it answersAre you collaborative?

Spotify's wording puts the weight on alignment across boundaries, not on being pleasant inside one team. Breaking down silos and sharing context freely are the operative verbs: publishing what you know before someone has to come and ask for it, and pointing separate roadmaps at one shared outcome. On a resume that reads as work that crossed a team boundary and moved because you made the context travel with it.

What it means in practice
Evidence it like this

Name the boundary you crossed, the mechanism you used to cross it (a shared contract, a migration guide, a joint review, a single source of truth), and the result the other teams got. The shared goal has to be visible, and so does your individual contribution to it.

Aligned three service teams on a single playback-telemetry event schema, publishing the contract and a migration guide that removed duplicated pipeline work and took cross-team integration defects from 14 per quarter to 2.

Avoid this anti-pattern

Collaboration asserted as a personality trait, with no boundary named, no shared goal, and no result. The mirror-image failure is describing a whole team's outcome so broadly that your own contribution disappears.

Collaborative team player who works well cross-functionally and communicates effectively with stakeholders.

Spotify value 02

Human Judgment

Smart decisions and thoughtful risk-taking create lasting value. Human Judgment means we trust our people to make the right calls, learn from mistakes, and grow.

Spotify's description, verbatim
Assessment question it answersAre you adaptable?

This is the value about calls made on incomplete information, and about what happened when one of them went wrong. Spotify pairs trusting people to make the right calls with learning from mistakes, so the readable evidence is a decision you personally owned, the tradeoff you weighed, and the consequence you can measure, rather than a process you executed because someone handed it to you.

What it means in practice
Evidence it like this

Show the decision, not the analysis. Name the option you rejected and why, then attach the measurable consequence of the call. A tradeoff with two sides and a number is the single hardest thing to fake and the easiest thing for a reviewer to read.

Chose a lighter ranking model over a higher offline-accuracy variant after latency testing showed the larger model would add 180ms at p95, holding recommendation click-through flat while cutting serving cost 34%.

Avoid this anti-pattern

Judgment claimed as an adjective stack, with no decision, no rejected option, and no consequence. The second failure is a resume where every listed call succeeded, which reads as curation rather than judgment.

Data-driven decision maker with strong analytical judgment and a proven ability to solve complex problems.

Spotify value 03

Make It Happen

Bias toward action defines us. We don't wait for perfect conditions, we create them. Make It Happen is about execution, urgency, and delivering results that matter.

Spotify's description, verbatim
Assessment question it answersDo you take ownership of your work and take pride in what you deliver?

Execution and urgency, with delivering results that matter as the qualifier that does the real work. Spotify's line is about not waiting for perfect conditions, so what reads on a resume is something you shipped inside a real constraint, on a date, with the outcome attached. Motion without a delivered result is not this value.

What it means in practice
Evidence it like this

Lead with what shipped and when, then the constraint you shipped it inside, then what the delivery unblocked. A smaller thing delivered early beats a larger thing described as in progress.

Shipped the first version of a podcast churn-risk dashboard in 6 weeks by building on an existing warehouse table instead of waiting on a new pipeline, putting weekly retention cohorts in front of the product team a full quarter earlier than the planned build.

Avoid this anti-pattern

Speed described as temperament instead of demonstrated as delivery. Listing everything you were involved in during a launch is the same failure in a longer form: involvement is not shipping.

Fast-paced, results-oriented self-starter who thrives in ambiguity and consistently delivers under pressure.

The published rubric

The five questions Spotify says
it asks about you.

On its start-your-journey FAQ, Spotify states what it assesses in five questions: “Do your values align with our values? Do you take ownership of your work and take pride in what you deliver? Are you adaptable? Are you collaborative? Are you driven?” That is the only published evaluation rubric Spotify has, which makes it the most valuable five lines on the entire careers site. The value each question tests, and the evidence that answers it, are ResumeAdapter's mapping.

What happened. Innovative, collaborative, sincere, passionate, and playful do not appear anywhere on lifeatspotify.com. Spotify publishes One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen instead. We are deliberately not giving you a changeover date, because that date is not verifiable from any Spotify source. Superseded is the accurate word.

Why it is still everywhere. Third-party interview guides copied Spotify's pre-rebrand material, then copied each other. Three of the top ten Google results for spotify core values still publish the old five, and most interview-prep articles still coach candidates against them. None of them cite the current source page, which is how the error survives.

What to do instead. Rewrite your prep against the current three and the five published questions. If you already drafted stories for the old labels, the underlying work is usually reusable: a collaboration story maps onto One Team and onto the “Are you collaborative?” question almost unchanged, and a story about a risky call maps onto Human Judgment. What has to go is the vocabulary, because quoting a retired value set back to an interviewer is the clearest possible signal that you researched the company from aggregators rather than from Spotify.

The practical version: never write any value name on the resume, current or retired. Write the outcome that contains it. A bullet that shows a boundary you crossed and the defects it removed evidences One Team without spending a single word on the phrase, and it survives the next rebrand too.

The hiring bar, in Spotify's words

We hire people who are good at what they do. But just as important, are a good match for us.

Two gates, stated in one sentence. Craft gets you read; the values decide the second half.

What a bandmate is

we look for bandmates who are 'all in,' ready to contribute to a high-performing culture where every voice helps us play to win.

Spotify calls its employees bandmates. High-performing and every voice sit in the same sentence, which is the same tension the three values encode.

Work From Anywhere

Through our Work From Anywhere program, we lean into flexibility that respects your role and expertise, while purposefully championing the magic of in-person collaboration.

Flexibility and in-person collaboration are published together, in one sentence, on the same page.

Purposeful Presence

We lean into our offices as the primary arena for building deep connections and driving the business forward as one.

The 2026 careers-site language leans noticeably more toward offices. Read it as an emphasis, not as a published reversal of Work From Anywhere.

How to read Work From Anywhere in 2026

Both lines are live on Spotify's careers site at the same time: the flexibility program and the Purposeful Presence emphasis on offices as the primary arena. Read that as flexibility plus a noticeably office-leaning 2026 tone, not as a rollback and not as a return-to-office mandate. No source supports calling it either. Roles are still location-tagged and every posting carries a named city, so Work From Anywhere is an employee program, not an apply-from-anywhere hiring model.

One more line worth knowing before an interview, because it tells you what the company expects you to already be using: Spotify says “Every Spotifier gets access to the world's leading AI tools, not just as a perk but as a baseline.”

  1. 01

Prepare against the current three, not the superseded five

Spotify publishes three values, One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen, and calls the set The Bassline. Innovative, collaborative, sincere, passionate, and playful no longer appear on lifeatspotify.com. Strip the old five out of your prep material first, because a resume or an interview answer built on them is answering a framework Spotify no longer publishes.

  2. 02

Pick one owned piece of work per value

Choose three real things you did: one that crossed a team boundary for One Team, one where you made a call on incomplete information for Human Judgment, and one you shipped inside a hard constraint for Make It Happen. Pick work you owned individually. A team outcome with no visible contribution of your own evidences nothing.

  3. 03

Attach a mechanism and a number to each

Rewrite each as a single bullet carrying the mechanism and the measured result: the shared contract you published and the defects it removed, the option you rejected and the latency or cost the choice changed, the version you shipped early and the decision it unblocked. Never write the value name into the bullet. If the bullet only works because the value is stated, it is not evidence.

  4. 04

Answer the five published questions, then scan and iterate

Spotify says it asks whether your values align with its values, whether you take ownership and pride in what you deliver, and whether you are adaptable, collaborative, and driven. The same three bullets should answer all five. Upload your resume to ResumeAdapter against a specific Spotify posting to see which value is asserted as an adjective instead of evidenced by a metric, and iterate until each one is visible in the work itself.

FAQ

Spotify values, FAQ

The questions candidates ask once they notice that Spotify's own careers site and the top-ranking interview guides do not agree. Answers are byte-identical to the FAQPage JSON-LD, because AI engines that extract HTML and AI engines that extract JSON-LD should not see different text.

What are Spotify's core values?

Three: One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen. Spotify calls the set The Bassline and publishes it on lifeatspotify.com. The five-value list many guides still teach is superseded and no longer published.

What is The Bassline at Spotify?

The Bassline is Spotify's name for its three values. Spotify calls them the foundation of everything it does, a constant rhythm that keeps the company in sync while it improvises and innovates.

Does Spotify still use its old five values?

No. Innovative, collaborative, sincere, passionate, and playful are superseded and no longer appear on lifeatspotify.com. Spotify publishes One Team, Human Judgment, and Make It Happen instead. Three of the top ten Google results for spotify core values still list the old five, because they copied pre-rebrand material.

What does Spotify look for in candidates?

Spotify frames it as two gates: it hires people who are good at what they do, but just as important, are a good match for it. The published assessment questions cover values alignment, ownership and pride in what you deliver, adaptability, collaboration, and drive.

What are the five questions Spotify asks about candidates?

In Spotify's own words: Do your values align with our values? Do you take ownership of your work and take pride in what you deliver? Are you adaptable? Are you collaborative? Are you driven? These five are the only published evaluation rubric Spotify has.

How do I show Spotify's values on my resume?

Evidence them, do not name them. One quantified bullet per value: a team boundary you crossed and the shared goal that moved for One Team, a call you owned with the tradeoff and its measured consequence for Human Judgment, and something you shipped inside a hard constraint for Make It Happen.

Why do you want to work at Spotify?

Answer through the current values rather than through the product. Tie one specific thing you have done to One Team, Human Judgment, or Make It Happen, and to Spotify's own framing that it hires people who are good at what they do and are a good match for it. An answer built on the superseded five values signals outdated preparation.

What is Work From Anywhere at Spotify?

Spotify's flexibility program. Its careers site describes leaning into flexibility that respects your role and expertise while purposefully championing in-person collaboration, and its Purposeful Presence language leans into offices as the primary arena for building deep connections. That is an office-leaning emphasis, not a published rollback, and roles are still location-tagged.
