What Principals and Hiring Committees Actually Prioritize in Teacher Resumes
Teacher hiring has become more competitive and data-driven than most candidates realize. Principals reviewing 50+ applications for a single position look for three things immediately: certification status (state, endorsement areas, grade levels), student outcome data (growth percentages, proficiency rates, standardized test improvements), and evidence of differentiated instruction. If your resume leads with 'passionate educator' instead of your certification details and measurable impact, it will not make the first cut.
The teacher shortage is real but unevenly distributed. STEM, special education, bilingual, and CTE (Career and Technical Education) teachers are in extreme demand, while elementary and social studies positions remain highly competitive. Your resume should highlight any shortage-area qualifications, dual certifications, or ESL/ENL endorsements, as these credentials can be the difference between a single interview and five simultaneous offers.
Technology integration is no longer a bonus line on a teaching resume; it is an expected competency.
