What Civil Engineering Hiring Managers Actually Screen for in 2026
Civil engineering hiring at firms like AECOM, Jacobs, WSP, and state DOTs is dominated by ATS filters configured for very specific technical vocabulary: project phase (planning, design, construction management, inspection), discipline (transportation, structural, geotechnical, water resources, environmental), regulatory frameworks (AASHTO, FHWA, state DOT standards), and tools (AutoCAD Civil 3D, HEC-RAS, MicroStation, Bentley). A resume that says 'designed road infrastructure' instead of 'designed 3.2-mile arterial roadway alignment in Civil 3D per AASHTO Green Book standards, producing PS&E package for City of Seattle review' will be filtered out before a project manager ever reads it.
Professional Engineering (PE) licensure is the single most important credential in civil engineering and should be in your resume header and title—not buried in a certifications section at the bottom. For PE holders, the first line recruiters verify is your license number, state, and discipline. For EIT (Engineer-in-Training) or unlicensed engineers, explicitly stating 'PE Candidate—FE passed, PE examination scheduled [date]' is significantly better than omitting the subject entirely.
