What Product Managers and IT Directors Filter for in Business Analyst Resumes

Business analyst hiring in 2026 sits at the intersection of two parallel screening tracks: the ATS keyword filter, which looks for Jira, Confluence, SQL, user stories, and BPMN; and the human filter, which looks for evidence that you translated ambiguous business problems into structured requirements that developers could actually build. Candidates who satisfy only one of these tracks get filtered out. A BA resume with no metrics — only vague phrases like 'gathered requirements and facilitated workshops' — passes neither test convincingly. The breakthrough framing is: requirements that you captured led to a product or system change that had a measurable business outcome.

The data analytics crossover is redefining what a business analyst is expected to deliver. Senior BAs at technology companies are now expected to validate their own requirements by querying data themselves, building dashboards in Tableau or Power BI, and presenting findings to executive stakeholders. Candidates who list SQL and data visualization tools alongside Jira and requirements documentation are treated as a distinct, higher-value talent pool. If you have built any analysis or reporting assets yourself rather than waiting for data teams to deliver them, surface those accomplishments prominently.

Agile experience has gone from a differentiator to a baseline requirement, but most candidates describe it passively. Writing 'worked in Agile environment' signals participation, not contribution. The higher-value signal is ownership of Agile artifacts: you wrote the user stories, you groomed the backlog, you facilitated the sprint planning, you defined the acceptance criteria. If you were a de facto product owner in anything but title, say so. Describing Agile ownership at the artifact level — not just the methodology level — moves your resume from 'participated in Agile' to 'drove delivery outcomes in Agile.'

Phrases That Get Business Analysts Rejected

Listing languages isn't enough. Context matters. "JavaScript" is good; "Built REST APIs with Node.js" is hired.

Gathered requirements from stakeholders and documented business processes.

The default BA phrase on 80% of resumes. No tool named, no scale, no outcome. ATS and humans both ignore it.

Elicited and documented 120+ functional requirements for a claims automation platform, enabling a reduction in processing time from 14 days to 4 days and saving $2.1M annually.

Worked in an Agile environment using Scrum methodology.

'Worked in Agile' signals passive participation, not contribution. Name the artifacts you owned and the delivery outcome.

Managed Jira backlog across 5 concurrent sprints, authoring 80+ user stories with acceptance criteria and reducing requirement rework by 40% through UAT-aligned story definition.

Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Self-assessed soft skills add zero ATS value. Replace with a facilitation metric or a cross-functional deliverable.

Facilitated 12 JAD workshops with 40+ cross-functional stakeholders, delivering a 150-page BRD within a 6-week project constraint.

Created reports to help the business make better decisions.

No tool named, no audience, no measurable impact. Who used the reports? Did they save time or improve a metric?

Built 3 Tableau dashboards for 6 VP stakeholders tracking claims SLA and agent productivity, reducing ad hoc reporting requests by 55%.

Responsible for process improvement and efficiency projects.

Describes a job category, not a result. What process? How much improvement? How was it measured?

Mapped 35 business processes in Visio using BPMN 2.0, identifying 8 automation opportunities that eliminated 3,200 hours of annual manual data entry.

Analyzed data to identify business trends and insights.

'Analyzed data' is the vaguest possible description. Name the tool, the dataset, and the decision your analysis enabled.

Wrote 25+ SQL queries in Snowflake to validate ERP migration data, identifying 6 integrity issues affecting 14,000 customer records before go-live.
